Ystra the Witch Anims

Get To Know Me!

Hi there! The name's Veronica and I'm a 3D animator currently studying at The Game Assembly, Malmö!My love for the medium of animation started at about the age of 7-8 when I watched Avatar The Last Airbender for the first time. I was immediately infatuated with the artstyle and fluidity of it and so the first seed was planted. However it wasn't until a couple of years later when I would finally convince my mother to buy a laptop so I could play Nancy Drew where gaming as a hobby would slowly start to click for me.Although I'm more of an indoors person who prefers a good movie or book over skydiving, I'm still a sucker for trying new things whether it's something you can eat, collect or simply enjoy together. I'm always bringing new weird snacks for my classmates to try and it always brings a smile to their faces (and perhaps a slight look of disgust).I began my journey as a game artist rather than animator and studied Game Art at PlaygroundSquad in Falun. During those projects however characters still needed to be rigged and animated and since nobody else wanted to do it I thought I'd give it a try. Turns out I ended up really liking it and decided to become an animator instead! Now I'm finally here and ready to head out in the wild west of video games and I can't wait for where my next adventure brings me!

Please note, I am part of The Game Assembly’s internship program. As per the agreement between the Game Industry and The Game Assembly, neither student nor company may be in contact with one another regarding internships before April 23rd.
Any internship offers can be made on May 5th, at the earliest.

The Scout

Line tracing as well as an aiming system so you can shoot

A system for shooting as well as a delay out so you can't spam the fire button.Followed by reloading the gun

An aiming system that predicts where the grenade will go once the player throws it

Tossing the grenade

When you dive I wanted the camera to move with the player as they go forward.

I set it so when the enemy dies they'll ragdoll to ensure they'll be affected by the impact from the grenade

Skyline Sprint

This was a project I made in my first year at this school when I was approached by a second year programmer that wanted first person animations for his portfolio project. I've always loved first person animations so I jumped at the opportunity to learn more about it in this collarboration and I'm so happy with how the result turned out!

Alien Cinematic

I started with this cinematic as a part of my APP (Advanced Project Planning) in which I had a couple of weeks on me to create an animation of my choosing. I wanted to try some new things and decided to mix horror with first person and spice it up by trying to make a cinematic out of it.

My finished APP rendered in Maya

After I was finished with my APP I realized I wanted to do something more with it as I wasn't quite satisfied with the creature animations nor the sadly lacking lighting in Maya. So when the time came for portfolio planning I knew exactly what I wanted my firt project to be.

The Imp

Ft. The Prowler

The Imp was actually a workpiece from a former employment I had working on an undisclosed project. I fell in love with this little critter the second I laid my eyes on him and just knew I had to pay homage to him by adding him to my portfolio.

I sadly didn't get the opportunity to animate this creepy fella but one day I hope to come back and change that!

Sub Umbra

For this game I was in charge of the main character where I got the honor to put on a mocap suit and go to Sharkmob to record motion capture for us to use. It was an incredible experience I won't forget anytime soon.

Beach

This was our third game project at the school where the goal was to create a sidescrolling platformer. What made this project so special and stand out was that it marked the first and only time we were completely in charge of the graphical style of the game. Whether you chose stop motion, 2D or in our case a mixture of 3D and pixel art, we had a great level of freedom with this project. For our game simply titled "Beach" we wanted to make a game about a troublemaker child who gets cursed by a fly queen after she ruins the queens sandcastle. As she gets shrunk down to the size of a fly she now has to fight her way through the dangers of the beach to reach the queen in hopes of returning to normal again (and perhaps uncover some tragedies along the way).

For this project I was in charge of animating our game's final boss, Lord Flyquaad (technically Queen Flyquaad but I went with Lord for obvious reasons). She was made out to look very innocent to throw people off and it's not until later in the game you start to uncover truly how twisted and sinister she really is.I had an absolute blast rigging and animating this wonderful little critter and I'm super happy with how she turned out.

Since we went with a mixture of 3D and pixel art all of our models were rigged and animated in Maya and afterwords we rendered them in Aseprite as spritesheets so they could be turned into pixelated animation instead.

Apart from the queen I also got to make some animated vfx directly in Aserprite since I was already familiar both with making Pixel art as well as using the program itself.

My main focus during this game project became the final cutscene as you confront Lord Flyquaad head on in a fighting sequence.

This project was so much fun to work on and although we faced many hurdles and numerours technical difficulties we still managed to create something I am extremely proud of and this easily cemented itself as my favorite game project durinbg my time at this school.Much love to everyone involved <3

Between Life and Death

In this project my fellow animator and I decided to divide the work into rigging and animation as he wanted to dive deeper in rigging and I wanted to try a new style of animating (based on a grid). In the end it worked wonderfully and our game became a huge success, even going on to win Rookie's Game of the Year: People's Choice as well as SGA Best Mobile Game of 2024!

Split Apart

This was a project I made during my previous studies as a Game Artist at Playgroundsquad. During this time I got to make some models for some props but more importantly I got to experience more 3D rigging and animating as my love for it grew.

Upperbody animated by me and lowerbody animated by my classmate

I was tasked with animating the upperbody of our split character which was something very unique I hadn't gotten to try out yet, it was surprisingly fun but also really educational to understand how one can walk without having legs.

I also got to try and animate some animals (or rather their heads) as we wanted the backstage of the circus to display some magical elements.

Credits

Liberosis

Our magnum opus at Playgroundsquad was a game called Liberosis about a lost nomad, aimlessly wandering the world trying to piece out where their people have gone in a magical land filled with flying creatures and floating islands.

It was insanely fun to work on such a whimsical creature and figure out how they move both on the ground and in the air.

I also got to work on some ridiculously cute animals soaring through the skies!

Credits

This project I had one goal in mind. Make the monsters (maggots) as disgusting yet oddly cute as possible.

Spite: Web of Decay

For our 6th project my time was purely dedicated to enemies and a boss battle. All of them were spider themed but I still wanted them all to have distinct personalities and ways of moving, it was a fun challenge for sure and also my first time making a proper boss battle!

The bloater is slow and slugguish in his movements but don't get to close or he'll vomit all over you

The Runner is a faster and more agile enemy, not being able to see where he's going has never stopped him
